My name is Heather Hamilton and in 2007 my second born child, a sweet son named Samuel, passed away from a devastating form of bacterial meningitis. He was six weeks old. During Samuel's joyful life, much of which was spent in the pediatric intensive care unit of our local children's hospital, my family and I learned the importance of finding a sense of normality amidst the crisis. We also learned that as a parent of a critically ill child, you often feel helpless because
there is so little care and comfort you can offer your own child. That's why we created the Joyful Life Library, as a way to bring the comfort of home to the hospital.
We believe that reading a favorite story to a child is an act of love that's comforting to the child and the caregiver alike, and is especially important when life has been turned upside down because of a little one's hospitalization. We know the importance of being able to sit and read a book to your child, just like you would do at home, regardless of all the tubes and beeping machines, which is why we've set out to create libraries for pediatric intensive care patients at children's hospitals across the country.

It brings us so much joy to think of the parents that are able to give comfort to their hospitalized child by reading to them.
Reading books that are there because of Samuel's joyful life.
